AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – August 5th, 2025 – Amsterdam’s streets, renowned for cycling, are further innovating with the launch of PowerShelter’s groundbreaking public e-bike battery charging lockers, or ‘Shelters’. This pioneering network, launching Fall 2025 with 15 locations, addresses a growing gap in e-bike infrastructure by providing safer, smarter, and more inclusive access to battery charging across the city.
The Challenge: A City at a Crossroads
Despite its cycling fame, Amsterdam faces a paradox: more e-bikes means more riders but also skyrocketing thefts and safety concerns. The hazards of battery fires remain front of mind for policy makers, insurers and businesses operating across the city. These issues compromise safety and limit e-bike adoption. E-bike batteries are often found under chairs in bars and restaurants. Beyond unprotected outlets at a small number of Amsterdam Municipality bike garages, charging options are nearly non-existent outside of people’s homes.
“There are thousands of places to charge an electric car across Amsterdam – why are we limited to charging our e-bikes at home?” said Jake De Wulf, one of the co-founders of PowerShelter.
“The shift away from cars is happening, but the infrastructure hasn’t kept up. PowerShelter is here to fill that gap – and build the charging network our cities need. Amsterdam is just the start.”
A Universal, Open-Access Solution
PowerShelter’s lockers are set to revolutionize the e-mobility landscape. Designed with fire-safety, theft-proofing, and simplicity in mind, they are compatible with any e-bike battery, removing barriers caused by closed-loop systems that exclude other brands and riders by design. The network is designed to serve everyone on an e-bike: from food couriers to couples out on a date, and all riders in between.
“Unlike closed, siloed solutions, ours is open-system, plug-and-charge,” explained Brett Bouthillier, the company’s other co-founder. “Secure, accessible to all, and scalable – we want every rider to feel safe and empowered to ride further.”
Strategic Partnerships, Local Impact
With the rider experience at its heart, PowerShelter is working across the city to build an ecosystem. Many of Amsterdam’s iconic brands and locations have agreed to participate in the network. PowerShelter’s growing network includes venues from stadiums to cinemas, and museums to parking garage micromobility hubs. The brand continues to add new location partners up to and through the launch of the network.
The company has also negotiated with multiple leading bike brands to embed official (OEM) chargers directly into their Shelters. Other compartments will remain available for riders who do bring their own chargers – or simply want a secure place to store their battery and protect against theft.
More information on locations and brand partners will be shared by the company closer to launch date.
Beyond Streets: Building an Ecosystem for Sustainable Cities
PowerShelter’s lockers deliver multi-layered benefits:
- Fire Safety: Industry-leading technology to prevent dangerous battery fires
- Theft Prevention: Tamper-proof, secure lockers protecting valuable batteries
- Universal Compatibility: Open system supporting all brands and models
- Strategic Placement: Locations chosen based on rider flow and safety needs
- Inclusive Access: Enabling everyone – from delivery drivers to commuters – to participate safely
With a modular design, deployment can be rapid and tailored to diverse urban environments – from restaurant and event spaces to residential bike parks and transit hubs.
“Cities the world over are racing against climate deadlines, and e-bikes are a perfect tool to reduce emissions,” said Brett Bouthillier.
“Our infrastructure will unlock the full potential of e-mobility, helping cities meet ambitious decarbonization targets while fostering social and economic opportunity for all.”
As transportation accounts for nearly a quarter of energy-related CO₂ emissions, innovations like PowerShelter’s network are vital. By enabling safer, more reliable charging, they make sustainable mobility not just possible but preferable.
