Turned an insurance ultimatum into a 5-star amenity
"The solution preserved both safety and service expectations, reducing risk while maintaining the hotel's reputation for operational excellence."
-Valentin, Manager Hotel Okura
CHALLENGE: Batteries at the Dinner Table
For a 5-star property like Hotel Okura, safety cannot come at the expense of service. Management faced a growing operational headache: guests were bringing e-bike batteries into the building, even placing them under their chairs during multi-course dinners in their Michelin-starred restaurants.
The situation became critical when the hotel’s insurer issued an ultimatum. E-bike batteries were prohibited from being brought indoors due to fire risk. The hotel faced a stark choice: either ban e-bikes entirely (disrupting both guest and employee experiences) or risk voiding their insurance coverage.
SOLUTION: Outdoor E-Bike Battery Charging for Guests and Staff
PowerShelter installed two CoreShelter units on the hotel's exterior premises, keeping all battery charging outside the building without disrupting the guest experience.
Two distinct units handle different user needs:
For Guests (Zero Friction): A CoreShelter with PIN locks allows guests to secure and charge their batteries instantly, without apps or registration. No friction, no compromise on service.
For Staff (High Security): A second unit near the staff parking area, equipped with RFID locks that integrate with existing security badges. Staff have a safe place to charge during their shift.
IMPACT: Insurance Met, Guest Experience Intact
Moving batteries outside the building solved the insurance problem. It also made the guest experience better, not worse.
Insurance Requirements Met: All e-bike batteries are stored and charged outside the building, removing the thermal runaway risk that triggered the insurer's ultimatum.
Guest Experience Protected: Guests can safely store and charge batteries during their visit without bringing them into dining or hospitality areas.
Staff Continuity: Employee commutes are supported and the hotel's reputation for operational excellence remains intact.
KEY TAKEAWAY: Safety and Service are Not a Trade-Off
Hotel Okura didn't have to choose between protecting their asset and maintaining 5-star service. By installing separate outdoor charging infrastructure for guests and staff, PowerShelter resolved the insurance ultimatum without a single compromise to the guest experience.
