One charging locker for three e-cargo bike brands. Zero downtime, full rental readiness.
CHALLENGE: Managing Multi-Brand E-Cargo Bike Charging
IKEA launched a zero-emission urban mobility pilot in Utrecht and Stockholm. The model was straightforward: customers purchase, rent a cargo bike to bring items home, then return the vehicle.
But running a high-turnover rental fleet across three different e-cargo bike brands created a charging bottleneck. VOK, Nuweil and FreeTrailer each run on different battery types, so managing charge across all three became a logistical problem staff had to solve at every handover.
SOLUTION: E-Bike Charging Where the Fleet Parks
IKEA installed two PowerShelter units directly within the vehicle parking zones, so batteries could be swapped on the spot without moving equipment elsewhere.
Multi-Brand Compatibility: VOK, Nuweil and FreeTrailer each run on a different battery type. A single PowerShelter unit supports all three, removing the need for brand-specific chargers or costly facility upgrades.
Operational Readiness: With charging in the parking zone, battery swaps became a thirty-second task and rental turnaround stopped being a bottleneck.
IMPACT: Rental Readiness Meets Urban Accessibility
The pilot proved that a busy rental fleet only works if every returned bike is immediately ready for the next customer — and that's exactly what PowerShelter's e-bike charging infrastructure delivered:
Customer Reliability: Batteries always charged and ready at handover, making the e-cargo bike a dependable, low-cost alternative to car transport and removing range anxiety from the rental experience.
Plug-and-Play Deployment: Immediate installation with no facility upgrades meant the store activated a new service without disrupting operations.
Scalable Framework: The pilot has opened the path to EU-wide expansion, including API integration for fully automated fleet booking.
KEY TAKEAWAY: Build the Ecosystem, Not Just the Fleet
IKEA’s customer-centric vision around urban accessibility succeeded because they launched a complete ecosystem rather than just a fleet. By integrating PowerShelter alongside VOK, Nuweil and FreeTrailer cargo bikes, they built a unified infrastructure where the hardware worked in sync. This coordinated approach removed the logistical burden from the start, making sustainable transport easy for the staff to manage and consistently reliable for the customer to use.
