CHALLENGE: No Dedicated Solution
At Google Amsterdam, almost no one arrives by car. With 500 employees across six floors in Amsterdam Zuid, public transit and bikes are the norm—and these bikes are, increasingly, electric.
Google recognized this trend and the implications on fire safety early on. They put a rule in place: no charging e-bike batteries inside the building. The thinking was sound. But without a dedicated alternative, the rule was difficult to follow in practice. The intention was there. They just needed the infrastructure to back it up
SOLUTION: Fire Safety, Made Simple
PowerShelter and Google first connected in May 2025. The conversation was immediate and energetic. The fit was clear: a cycling-first workforce, a genuine fire safety concern, and a team that wanted to get it right.
Google chose a measured approach. One SmartShelter unit to start, installed inside the office building. A clear framework to follow real usage closely, gather employee feedback, and expand when it proves successful.
Touchscreen PIN Access: Employees access their compartment via a simple PIN on the SmartShelter touchscreen. No app required, no card to lose. Fast, intuitive, and straightforward for daily use.
Fire-Safe by Design: Each compartment has integrated fire suppression, temperature sensors, and cooling fans—replacing ad-hoc charging with a single, purpose-built unit that manages the risk on site.
Built to Expand: Modular by design, the SmartShelter grows with demand. Additional SmartModules connect directly to the existing installation—no new infrastructure, no disruption, just more capacity where it's already working.
IMPACT: From Charging Concern to Campus Standard
KEY TAKEAWAY: The Right Instinct Needs the Right Infrastructure
Google Amsterdam had already made the right call: no charging e-bike batteries inside the building without a dedicated, fire-safe solution. The thinking was sound. What was missing was the infrastructure to make it work. One SmartShelter—installed inside, no building works required—closed that gap.
Employees now have a designated, fire-safe place to charge every day. And when demand grows, additional SmartModules connect directly to the existing unit. No disruption. No starting from scratch.
